But top of the priority list would be proper off-road tyres: the dual purpose' tyres fitted as standard are too road orientated. With only 5.5 inches of travel in the front and 4.7 inches in the rear,it's really more of a street bike with adventure styling. But it is a heavy bike for the middle-weight class with not a lot of suspension travel and a 17″ front wheel. For a start, gravel and adventure bikes aren't simply rebranded cyclo-cross bikes.

When your road suddenly turns to muddy ruts it's often enough to make some riders turn around and head back the other way. These motorcycles are usually heavier and more durable than the models derived from off-road motorcycles. Typical lightweight adventure bikes normally weigh in at sub 140 kg (fuelled without gear).

At one end, you can fit out an Enduro bike with luggage and head for the hills; at the other, you have large capacity road bikes with an extra bit of suspension travel and a high front mudguard. Some manufacturers approached the trend from the opposite direction, beginning with a street motorcycle and modifying it for adequate off-road performance.

It has a very smooth-running v-twin engine and it can also handle some basic dirt roads. The opportunity to hang out with a bunch of riders around the campfire in the evening, discussing the ride experience from the day, is a great ending before heading to bed.
